Dear Patient: Mr Dinanath,
your memory problems can be for different reasons. firstly this could be the onset of senile(age related) dementia especially if your parents had a similar history.
second, you mentioned being on tab alprazolam, which is an addictive medicine and whose long term side effects include memory impairment. Visiting a psychiatrist for your sleep related problems and finding a better substitute shall definitely help.
thirdly, it could be a part of an ongoing depressive episode or anxiety disorder.
fourthly, deficiency of essential micro nutrients like Vit B 12 are also known to cause similar problems.
Also, you haven't mentioned use of alcohol or nicotine, which may also be the culprit.
all in all you require a thorough assessment by a psychiatrist before any final diagnosis can be made and early intervention will be highly beneficial in impairing the progress of the same.
