Cerebrovascular disease refers a group of conditions of brain dysfunction that affect the blood circulation to the brain causing limited or no blood flow to the affected areas of the brain. Hypertension is the most important cause, it damages the blood vessel lining, endothelium and exposing the underlying collagen where platelets aggregate to initiate a repairing process. A fall in blood pressure during sleep can then lead to a marked reduction in blood flow in the narrowed blood vessels causing ischemic stroke in the morning. Cerebrovascular disease can be prevented by quitting smoking, regular physical exercise, controlling blood pressure, taking healthy diet, avoiding anger or chronic stress and lowering blood cholesterol.
There are four common types of cerebrovascular disease:-
- Stroke
- Transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
- subarachnoid haemorrhage
- vascular dementia
Some of the symptoms of Cerebrovascular disease:-
- Flaccid paralysis
- Loss of gag reflex
- Dysphagia
- Apraxia
- Vomiting
- Seizures
- Fever
- Confusion
- Breathing difficulty
- Unconsciousness
- Severe
