Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak (CSF Leak) is the leakage of the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. A loss of CSF greater than its rate of production leads to a decreased volume inside the skull known as intracranial hypotension. There are two main leaks cranial leaks and spinal leaks. Cranial leaks occur in the head and spinal leaks occur when one or more holes form in the dura along the spinal cord. The leak may occur when there is a tear or a hole in the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, this drops the pressure around the brain and spinal cord. Certain causes that may cause CSF leak:-
- Head, brain or spinal injuries
- Head injury
- Spinal tap
- Placement of tubes for epidural anesthesia or pain medications
Some of the symptoms of Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak:-
- Headache
- Nausea
- Neck stiffness
- Light sensitivity
