Cerebral Palsy is a group term for neurological conditions affecting brain and nervous system that cause physical disability in human development. Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the motor centers of the developing brain and can occur during pregnancy, during childbirth, or after birth up to 3 years age. Cerebral palsy is not an infectious disease. The major causes of the cerebral palsy are infections during pregnancy, severe jaundice in the infant, Rh incompatibility between mother infant, physical & metabolic trauma of being born child and severe oxygen deprivation to the brain.
Several types of Cerebral Palsy are:-
- Spastic cerebral palsy
- Ataxic cerebral palsy
- Athetoid or dyskinetic cerebral palsy
- Hypotonic cerebral palsy
Some of the symptoms of Cerebral Palsy:-
- Stiffened muscles
- Seizures
- Swallowing problems
- Bladder problems
- Eyesight problems
- Hearing problems
- Over developed or under developed muscles
- Limited range of movements
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you have signs of cerebral palsy. Medication and the treatment will depend on the person and the severity of the condition.
