Cavity is a damage to the teeth that occurs due to tooth decay. The tooth decay may affect the outer coating of a tooth called the enamel and the inner layer called dentin. The decay is formed when foods with carbohydrates like bread, cereal, milk, soda, fruit, cake or candy stay in the teeth. The bacteria in the mouth turn them into acids. The acids in plaque dissolve the enamel, creating holes called cavities. The risk factors for the tooth decay include:
- Frequent snacking or sipping
- Certain foods and drinks
- Bedtime infant feeding
- Inadequate brushing
- Unable to get enough fluoride
- Dry mouth
- Eating disorders
- Heartburn
Some of the symptoms of cavity:-
- Toothache
- Sensitive teeth
- Visible holes or pits in the teeth
- Staining on surface of the tooth
- Mild to sharp pain when eating or drinking hot or cold foods
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a Dentist to identify the cavities and other dental conditions. The treatment of the cavities depends on the severity of the tooth decay.
