Cauda Equina syndrome is a rare syndrome of the neurologic condition which needs surgical emergency. The damage to the cauda equina causes acute loss of function of the lumbar plexus, of the spinal canal below the termination of the spinal cord. The most common causes of cauda equina syndrome are:
- Severe rupture of the disk in the lumbar area
- Narrowing of the stenosis
- Spine infection, inflammation, hemorrhage or fracture
- Severe lumbar spine injury
- Birth defect of abnormal blood vessels connections
Some of the symptoms of Cauda Equina syndrome:-
- Severe low back pain
- Pain, numbness or weakness in one or both legs
- Loss of sensation in legs, buttocks, and inner thighs
- Bladder or bowel dysfunction
- Sudden sexual dysfunction
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you have signs of cauda equina syndrome. Immediate treatment may be needed to relieve pressure on the nerves and surgery may prevent the permanent damage as paralysis of the legs, loss of bladder, sexual function, and bowel control.
