Cataract is a loss of transparency in the normally clear lens of the eye which is the most common cause of vision loss in people. The major causes of cataract are ageing, exposure to radiation, physical injury, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, static medicines, family history, previous eye surgery, obesity and more.
Types of cataract:
A subcapsular cataract occurs at back of the lens. Diabetic people are at high risk of developing this type of cataract.
A nuclear cataract is formed deep in the central zone of the lens. These cataracts are usually observed in aged people.
A cortical cataract occurs in the central nucleus of the lens cortex in a spot like form. This is characterized by white, wedgelike opacities that start in the periphery of the lens.
Some of the symptoms of cataracts:-
- Gradual, painless, increasingly blurred or double vision
- Halos or blurriness around lights
- Color perception dulled
- Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens
- Difficulty driving at night or in bright light
- Yellow or milky white appearance of the lens
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult an Ophthalmologist if you have signs of cataracts that are worrying. The treatment would include surgery in severe cases to improve vision.
