Carotid Artery is a large vertical artery in red color that starts at the arch of the aorta and extends to the brain. The carotid artery divides into internal carotid artery and external carotid artery. Carotid stenosis is a narrowing of the carotid arteries that is caused by the buildup of plaque in the artery wall that reduces the blood flow to the brain. Atherosclerosis is the process of plaque buildup. Carotid stenosis is a major risk factor for stroke and can lead to brain damage. The treatment would target the risk of stroke by removing plaque buildup and preventing blood clots.
Some of the symptoms of Carotid Artery Stenosis:
- Weakness
- Loss of sensation of limb or trunk
- Loss of sight
- Artery sounds (sometimes)
- Ringing in the ears (sometimes)
