Carotid Artery Disease is an artery disease that builds up waxy substances called plaque inside carotid arteries. The arteries extend from the aorta in the chest to the brain inside the skull. Plaque is made up of cholesterol, calcium, and fibrous tissue. Carotid artery disease is a serious health problem because it can cause a stroke. The major cause of carotid artery disease is hardening of the arteries, other conditions as carotid aneurysm disease and Fibro muscular dysplasia may also cause carotid artery disease. Some factors that help in preventing carotid artery disease include exercising regularly, eating healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight.
Some of the symptoms of Carotid Artery Disease:
- Sudden weakness and numbness
- Sudden and severe headache
- Sudden trouble in vision
- Trouble in speaking or understanding speech
- Dizziness or loss of balance
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you have signs of carotid artery disease. The doctor may conduct few tests to diagnose the condition.
