Cardiac Hypertrophy or Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is thickening of the heart muscles in the septum that is between the ventricles and below the aortic valve. This would lead to stiffening of the heart walls and abnormal aortic & mitral heart valve function. The cause is not always known, usually the condition occurs with family history or due to aging with high blood pressure. Surgical procedures may be used to treat with cardiac hypertrophy and changes in lifestyle with diet & exercise may help in recovery.
Some of the symptoms of cardiac hypertrophy:
- Pressure or pain in the chest
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Fainting
- Palpitations
- Sudden death
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you have signs hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The treatment depends on the narrowing of the blood outflow tract and the functioning of the heart.
