Cardiac defects are structural problems that arise from the abnormal formation of the heart or major blood vessels. There are almost 20 distinct types of congenital heart defects. The major cause of the congenital heart defects may be either genetic or environmental, but usually occurs in combination of both. Not all the types need serious medication, but some complex congenital heart defects require medication or surgery.Some of the different types of cardiac defects listed are:
- Aortic Valve stenosis (AVS)
- Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)
- Coarctation of the Aorta (CoA)
- Ebstein\'s Anomaly
- Patent Ductus Arteriosus(PDA)
- Truncus Arteriosus
- Ventricular Septal Defect(VSD)
Some of the symptoms of cardiac defects:
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Pain and numbness in legs or arms
- Pain in the neck
- Upper abdomen and back pain
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you have frequent signs of chest pain and shortness of breath. The doctor may conduct few tests to diagnose the problem.
