A Callus is also called Tyloma. It is the area of the skin that thickens due to exposure to repetitive frictional forces in order to protect the skin. A callus need not be painful and a painful callus may need treatment. Calluses may develop on soles, hands, feet or any part of the body the body where there is repeated friction. Factors outside the body that cause calluses from friction and stress are ill-fitting shoes or socks, skipping socks, playing instruments or using hand tools, etc. The factors within the body that may lead to formation of callus are bony prominence or structural deformities, damaged sweat glands, faulty foot function as over pronation or over supination.
Some of the symptoms of callus:
- A thick, rough area of the skin
- A hardened, raised bump
- Tenderness or pain under the skin
- Flaky, dry or waxy skin
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you have signs of callus that are painful or inflamed. People with diabetes should have immediate doctor suggestion.
