Calcification is build up of calcium salts in a body tissue. During the formation of bone, calcium may be deposited abnormally in soft tissue causing it to harden and disrupt normal bodily processes. Calcification may occur in any part of the body. According to the health study, about 99 percent of calcium in the body is captured by teeth and bones and the remaining 1 percent dissolves in the blood. There may several disorders that cause the one percent to travel other areas of the body. This condition may cause problems over time.
When the bloodstream is unable to get rid of excess calcium, it may accumulate in parts of the body as arteries of the heart, brain, breasts and kidneys. Calcification may be caused due to various factors as, disorders of calcium metabolism, genetic or autoimmune disorders and infection of the breast, brain or kidneys.
Some of the symptoms of calcification:
- Tartar on teeth
- Calluses
- Arthritic bone spurs
- Kidney stones
- Gallstones
