Bulimia nervosa is commonly called as Bulimia. It is a serious eating disorder which may be life-threatening if left untreated. Bulimia is a condition of eating large amounts of food and then purge, trying to cut down extra calories in an unhealthy manner. Bulimia is classified into two types: purging bulimia and non-purging bulimia. Purging Bulimia is self-inducing vomiting or misuse laxatives, diuretics or enemas after bingeing. Nonpurging bulimia is to get rid of calories and prevent weight gaining such as fasting, harsh dieting or excessive exercise. The possible reason for bulimia is unknown but being a female, age, biology, psychological and emotional issue, societal pressure, and performance pressure in sports may increase the risk of the disorder.
Some of the symptoms of Bulimia:
- occupied with body shape and weight
- Living with fear of gaining weight
- Uncontrolled eating disorder
- Eating to the point of discomfort or abdomen pain
- Eating food in large episodes than normal meal or snack
- Forcing yourself for vomit or too much exercise
- Using dietary supplements or herbal products for weight loss
- Misusing laxatives, diuretics
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you notice bulimia symptoms with binge eating. Immediate medical attention is needed if left untreated the condition may worsen.
