Brainstem is located just above the spinal cord, which controls involuntary functions like heartbeat, breathing and blood pressure. Brainstem stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brainstem is interrupted. It is a life-threatening condition which may result in death as the damaged brainstem can no longer control the body\'s vital functions. The two common types of stroke are Ischemic stroke and Hemorrhagic stroke. People who smoke a lot, physical inactivity, alcohol abuse, and drug use are at high risk for brainstem strokes.
Some of the symptoms of brainstem strokes:
- Paralysis in legs, hands or face
- Vision problems
- Vertigo
- Problems with balancing or sensation
- Difficulty in chewing, swallowing and speaking
- Hearing loss
- Weakness
- Coma
