Borderline intellectual functioning is also known as borderline mental retardation. It is the condition of below average cognitive ability of a person. This is sometimes called as below average IQ (BAIQ), technically called cognitive impairment. Below average intellectual functioning can be caused by birth injury, fetal alcohol syndrome, and environmental exposure to toxins as lead, infections or genetics. These people have difficulty in learning, reasoning, planning, abstract thinking and decision making.
Some of the symptoms of borderline intellectual functioning:
- Poor attention
- Mood swings
- Poor concentration
- Mood swings
- Passive or overactive
- Dysphoria
- Anger
- Fearfulness
- Low self-esteem

Consult a doctor if you have signs of intellectual functioning. The early treatment may help in avoiding further damage.
