Blepharospasm is a neurological condition that is characterized as uncontrolled eyelid closure due to involuntary and sustained contractions of muscles around the eyes. This condition is also called eye twitching. In rare cases with severe symptoms may result in functional blindness and opening of eyelids would take a great effort. Some causes for blepharospasm are identified as history of dry eyes, drugs used to treat Parkinson\'s disease, sensitivity to hormone treatment, women going through menopause, and abnormal functioning of brain basal ganglia.
Some of the symptoms of Blepharospasm:
- Excessive blinking and spasms of eyes
- Uncontrolled contractions or twitches of eye muscles
- Dryness of eyes
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you have signs of blepharospasm. The eye disorders should be treated at the earliest possible before it turns to severe problem.
