Benign essential tremor is a nervous or neurological disorder that causes rhythmic shaking. It is also called as familial tremor or shaky hand syndrome. Essential tremor shortly called as ET is a movement disorder, typically involves tremor of arms, hands or fingers but may also involve head and other parts of the body. ET is more common in people aged 40 and above. The condition may not be life-threatening, but severe tremors may worsen the daily activities like holding a cup or glass without spilling, eat normally, shaving, writing and more.
Some of the symptoms of benign essential tremor:
- Tremor begin gradually
- Worsens with movement
- Usually occurs first in hands
- Head would motion in horizontal or vertical
- Emotional stress, fatigue, caffeine consumption or extreme temperatures would aggravate the condition
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you see signs of tremor and clearly explain the condition and previous health records. This may be the result of genetic mutation which is called as familial tremor.
