Jipmer Hospital, Pondicherry

The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, more popular as JIPMER,  was originally established by the French Government in the year 1823 in Pondicherry, now Puducherry, as École de Médicine de Pondichérry. The medical school was renamed as the Dhanvantari Medical College at the time of transfer of Pondicherry to the Government of India. JIPMER is an institute of national importance and a tertiary care referral hospital that is under the direct administrative control of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

JIPMER aims to provide a high quality learning environment for those undertaking taught and research degrees awarded by JIPMER in the Faculty of Medicine. Teaching and training for M.B.B.S. Degree at JIPMER is focused on health improvement, disease prevention, and cure. The vision of JIPMER is to be a model for health systems in India through innovation in education, patient-oriented research, and excellence in service.


JIPMER is a residential medical institution with its own campus spread over 195 acres. It has about 200 faculty and 360 resident physicians and over 3,000 nursing, administrative, and support staff. Every year it admits 145 undergraduate students and 75 postgraduate students. JIPMER is both an educational institute that imparts undergraduate and postgraduate medical training, and a working hospital that provides affordable medical care to a number of patients from Puducherry and the surrounding regions.
