The Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences is located in Lucknow and more popularly known as SGPGIMS. The institute, which was established in 1983, was named after Sanjay Gandhi and is a super-specialty teaching, training, and research institute attached to a hospital.
 
The institute, which is 15 km from the city, is situated on a 550-acre residential campus onRae Bareli Road. The institute offers its own degrees, that are recognized by the Medical Council of India. The hospital works as a referral hospital where patients have to bring a referral slip from the referring doctor. The referring physicians are requested to specify the nature of patients' medical problem, the specialty they wish to refer the patient to and the nature of help required from the Institute.

SGPGIMS endeavours to work on an appointment system. Hence, the patients are expected to re-visit the hospital only on appointment days, except in case of an emergency.
